First Meeting of the New Youth Council for 2023-2025
On Wednesday the 1st of November 2023 young people from across Sevenoaks Town gathered for the first Annual meeting of the Sevenoaks Youth Council since the elections that were held in September.
At the start of the meeting the Youth Councillors were welcomed by the Mayor of Sevenoaks Councillor Claire Shea. During the welcome she stated that she could not wait to see what the Youth Council would achieve in the next two years and looked forwarded to working with them on future projects.
During the meeting a vote was held to decide the Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer for the year. The outcome was Aanya was voted as the Chair with Niki as Vice-Chair and Simba as Treasurer.
Following this the Youth Council held a workshop to discuss ideas for activities in the Sevenoaks Town. it was noted from this workshop that Mental Health was one of the key themes. It was also suggested that more could be done for the promotion of local sports clubs and mentoring schemes

House in the Basement Youth Café
Celebrates 10 Years
Dignitaries, young people, current and past staff, and volunteers gathered together on Saturday 1st April 2023 to celebrate the House in the Basement Youth Café being open for 10 years. The catering and birthday cake was generously donated by Prestige Catering and much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Sevenoaks Town Council and Sevenoaks Youth Council were successful in obtaining a very significant £150,000 grant from Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust (now Enovert) for the conversion of the Stag basement to a youth facility.
House in the Basement Youth Café first opened its doors in 2012 and since then has seen thousands of visits from young people and hundreds of events. The Youth Café is also home to The Lewis Project and We Are Beams.

YOUTH COUNCIL PARLIAMENT TRIP
On Tuesday the 18th of October 2022 the Youth Council and young people from House in the Basement Youth Café were invited to visit the House of Commons along with Linda Larter the Town Clerk, Councilor Dr Merilyn Canet, Daren Mountain Manager of House in the Basement and Ieuan Chandler-Wilson, Youth Committee Clerk.
There was a tour around the historic building followed by a Question and Answer session hosted by Laura Trott the MP for Sevenoaks who also explained about her role as MP and how she is the voice in government for people in Sevenoaks and across the district.
The young people then participated in a Question-and-Answer session with Laura.

YOUTH COUNCIL PARLIAMENT TRIP
On 17th June 2019 the following seven members of Sevenoaks Youth Council visited the House of Parliament for a tour – Ronnie Day, Ola Kujawinska, Sam Crawford, Ishwar Sharma, Gabby Tan, Jacob Watson and Megan Ng. They were accompanied by Cllr Rachel Parry, Chairman of the Youth Services Committee and Linda Larter, Chief Executive from Sevenoaks Town Council.
Sir Michael Fallon said: “I was delighted to host the Sevenoaks Youth Council in Parliament on Monday 17th June. They were able to have a tour of both Chambers and trace the steps of politicians. The youth councillors posed some good but tough questions and I wish them well in their studies and future careers.”
The tour was followed by a 45-minute private meeting with Sir Michael Fallon in which a robust question and answer session took place. Below is a precis of the questions asked:
