Riding or carriage driving Session volunteers
Summary:
Preparing horses, assisting the coach teaching the riding or carriage driving lessons, and supporting the riders and carriage drivers.
Detail:
During the week we have morning, afternoon and evening sessions every weekday with carriage driving on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. We have a break at lunchtime for the ponies and the volunteers before restarting at 1.45pm.
In the morning the rides start at 10.30, but volunteer helpers arrive by 9 to muck out the stables, bring the ponies in, clean them up and give any extra feeds needed as well as creams or checks for any under a medical plan, and tack them up ready for the rides. There is usually time to have a coffee break after the preparations and before the riders arrive. The morning session helpers finish around midday or nearer 1 on Wednesdays.
For the afternoon sessions where the rides or carriage drives commence at 1.45 and 2pm respectively, helpers arrive around 1.15pm to 1.30pm to check the ponies which have been left in and prepare them for the afternoon rides. The afternoon session finishes at 4pm, though earlier for driving at the moment.
Volunteers assist the riders and drivers to put their hats on in the office, guide them to the indoor school, assist with mounting and getting into the carriages, leading the ponies, walking alongside riders ensuring they understand instructions from the coach in the middle of the arena and assisting them with holding reins/riding position/balance etc. They then assist with dismounting from the pony and carriage, moving ponies to and from the stables, untacking or unharnessing, and taking ponies back to their field if not needed for a later session, and sometimes also bringing in ponies needed later or for other reasons.
Everyone starts helping when they arrive, whether experienced with horses or not – as long as people have enthusiasm, patience and are happy to listen and respond to guidance to ensure everyone keeps safe it does not matter what level of knowledge volunteers have when they come. We train everything on the session and through team members being hands on, and if people are familiar with working with horses and riding we ensure the specifics we have to do in the Riding for the Disabled setting are known and understood.

The program offers a unique, blended program both in-person and online, providing an experience that will give you a fascinating insight into the world of policing and what it means to work for Kent Police. Three days of the course will take place at Kent Police College in Maidstone (Monday, Thursday and Friday between 9 am and 3.30 pm) and two days will take place online.
Over the week you will have the opportunity to meet officers, staff, and volunteers from a number of roles including:

During the week you will have the opportunity to share your ideas about policing and engage in interactive exercises.
At the end of the course, you will hear from colleagues within our Recruitment Team who will provide information about how to apply for a role with Kent Police as a police officer or member of police staff. You will also meet with an officer who has just completed their basic training, where they will share their experiences.
